The main purpose for music videos is to mainly sell the records, which can be complex. Music video are used to promote the song which in turn promotes an album. This of course then to help promote the artist  so audiences can be aware of  the artists identity in the music industry if successful. This is to also entertain and show off the artists talents so  we as audience can emerge to show our interest and opinions on the artist. Music videos  have different ways in selling their product, such as CD, and download by creating memorable visuals and to invoke the audiences reaction  so it's easier to keep hold in our memories. Marketing for purpose of exposure and expansion of the artists profile. Popular artist are remembered years later solely because of a memorable music video or other expansions through music.

However, not only the song is being sold the image of an artist is also one of the main aspects in which captures our audiences interests.Selling an image of an artist will set a certain mood in their video by attaching the song to certain experiences, this will help give the audience a better understanding of the song.The overall purpose is to help to generate money for the record company. 

In contrast modern music were originally made and used as a marketing device intended to promote and sale music recordings, which is called 'promos'. Whereas in the mid 1980s music video came to play a central role in the marketing of an act or artist. Music videos todays have become commonplace in the music industry, meaning that every song that makes it into the charts has a music video made. Which sometimes the popularity of the video is enough to propel the song in to the top 10. For example labels work together with MTV to ensure the playing of their videos, leading to increased sales of only certain artists and genres. 

 

One of the successful music video would be Michael Jackson 'Thriller' which was also listed by Guinness world records in 2006. His album sold 9 million for only a couple of months which was very successful, in 2009 his video was inducted  into the national film registry of the library congress. This was for being "culturally" historically significant.
